About a month ago while at work, my friends told me about this home remedy that I had never heard of. I had been coughing for about two weeks with no relief when I was informed that I should get some Vicks VapoRub and rub it on the bottoms of my feet, put on a pair of socks, then go to bed. This would ensure that I would not cough at night. I started laughing! What?! Now, I am from the country and I have never heard of that. Where I’m from we rub VapoRub on our chest, back, throat, under the nose and in the nose and maybe even swallow a little (I know you shouldn’t eat it, but growing up you just have to do what they tell you!). But, never have I heard of putting it on your feet.
So, what did I do? I went right to the store and bought some VapoRub. I just had to try it! If you rub the VapoRub on your feet it will make you stop coughing? That is crazy. Right? Anyway, I tried it for a few nights and only put the VapoRub on my feet (I did take Mucinex one night and Nighttime Cold medicine the other nights). My feet were a little tingly at first. I could smell the menthol through my covers and I did sleep well. So that was soothing. I noticed that I did not start back coughing until about 4 am. That was better than before. I eventually went to the doctor and found out that I had an upper respiratory infection that required a steroid shot, antibiotics, and some really good cough syrup. Even though I was taking medication, I continued to rub a little VapoRub on my feet because you just can’t go wrong with the powers of eucalyptus and menthol. They help open up all of your stuffy passages plus your feet feel all moisturized and soft, too.
The next time someone in my house starts all of that coughing and hacking, I will be grabbing the VapoRub to slather on their feet, might as well since they are going to get rubbed down in VapoRub anyway. 🙂 I can’t say for certain that it worked for me, but this is one home remedy that I will be using from now on.
