It is hard to always find books that represent our little brown babies. So, my husband, Tony, has been searching and collecting all kinds of books for our son. His book collection expands more than African American authors, but includes color rich books from all ethnicities of people, authors, and illustrators. We talked it over and decided that we would share some of the books that we have or will be purchasing for our son and for gifts.
Sometimes, we give books for birthday parties (especially girl parties because I don’t know what they like). It is just easier than thinking about all of the endless girly possibilities that you have to choose from. And to me, it just seems to be more thoughtful than a gift card.
Tony also puts a different book in Emerson’s backpack every few days for him to take to school. Emerson will ask his teacher to read it to the class. If she has time, she will read it and when she can’t, he will read it when his work is completed or in aftercare. The good thing about my son is that if it is a book about art, he will take it to the art teacher, if it’s written in Spanish he will take it to his Spanish class for his Spanish teacher to read. If Emerson is really into the book, it will keep him quiet and he will read it every chance he gets until it is finished. He got that from me! 🙂 LOL
You can find these books in your local bookstore or online. We go to Barnes and Nobles because we still like going into the store to touch and feel our books. Plus, Emerson loves the bookstore (they sell toys too you know!). Some books are also available for your e-readers.
Make sure that you check out my future posts with more book updates for that special little someone who deserves to get the gift of becoming a lover of books and reading.
